Se7en VS BoA in US?

se7en10.jpg

Top stars Se7en and Boa are entering the U.S. music market this spring, and are expected to compete head-to-head.

Boa revealed that she is currently preparing her U.S. album, aiming for its release in May. Se7en also expects to release his U.S. album in 2-3 months, which means that both singers will be debuting in the U.S. at the same time.

Since 2006, Se7en partnered up with top star Usher, TLC, and producer Mark Shimmel, Beyonce’s album producer Richie Harrison. They are currently making finishing touches to Se7en’s album.

Se7en’s record label YG Entertainment’s president, Yang Hyun Suk, said on his homepage on Feb. 1, “The album will soon be released.”

Boa will also join Se7en this May, making a smooth transition into the U.S. markets.

On the other hand, Boa’s album will be produced by Peter Rapfelson, who also produced an album for internationally reknown pop star Madonna, along with other well-known producers.

Both Boa and Se7en have earned much praise in Japan, as well as the rest of Asia. It will be interesting how their competition in the U.S. will turn out.

They are not the only Koreans debuting in the U.S. this year. JYP will soon see to J. Lim, G. Soul and Min’s officially debut in 2008. This is a decisive year for many Korean artists who will test the U.S. waters for success.

Talking about all these potential debuters, where is Rain? Wasn’t he planning on debuting in the U.S.?

Lovers for Six Years tops the box office

200802086love

The movie Lovers for Six Years (or Nothing Special, 6년째 연애중), starring Kim Ha-neul and Yoon Kye-sang, has reached # 1 at the Korean box office 5 days after its release.

The movie follows the story of a live-in couple (oh the horror!) who are bored with their 6 year relationship.

Of course boredom will set in. I say, if you are going to date for 6 long years, you might as well be married…

Who’s the K-ADDICT?

K-Addict is ‘Korean Drama Addict’ and ‘Korean Movie Addict’ combined into one. She’s someone who is obsessed in learning more about her favorite Korean actors, the Korean culture, and the Korean Language—even politics and tourist spots!!!

A K-addict doesn’t mind what other people would think of her as long as she has the heart to do the thing listed below.

It may refer to me (Kreah ) and it may refer to you, too! ^_^

Show related

She passionately watches Korean Dramas dubbed in their native language, or in cable channels, but will spoil herself by searching available information online like: summaries and reviews.

If she can’t wait for the next day the Drama airs, she’ll watch the episodes in Youtube, download episodes online, or buy DVDs so she can watch it nonstop and be the one to finish first in their neighborhood!

Actors related

Good-looking Korean Stars are big factors why a Drama becomes a favorite for K-addicts. Once that Korean star gets the her attention, she will constantly find information online about that star like his/her birthday, former and current relationships, and news.

A K-addict will also search for pictures and wallpapers, and save it in her computer. She even re-designs these pictures for her own pleasure.

She will also find what other dramas or movies her favorite actors and actresses starred in, and watch it if she already owns a dvd copy, or a downloaded episode, or avidly watch the dramas in Youtube. Nothing can stop her.

She is also glued in Youtube, too, watching subtitled interviews, music videos, commercials, bloopers, and concerts.

OST related

Soundtracks play big role for a drama or movie to be a hit. If the official soundtrack of the drama has a good beat, even a K-addict does not understand, this song will attract her to watch the series. The more she hears the song in the series, the more she likes it; especially if the song is played in her favorite parts.

But a K-addict is not contented on just hearing the song being played while watching the series. She will passionately find ways online to have a file of that song. She either buys the album online or downloads it from other sites. Then she’ll save it in her mp3 player, or I-pod so she can listen to it whenever she wants!

And the last thing she’ll do is find its translation and lyrics, and even memorize it!!!

Her Wishes and Wants

What a K-addict wishes most is to visit South Korea and see her favorite stars live! She wants to take pictures on Korea’s sceneries where her favorite scenes were shoot!!!

If she can’t do that, she’ll pleasure herself by learning Korean culture online and learning the language. She either enrolls in a Korean language course or studies it on her own. Remember she has the passion. Time and effort is nothing for her. If she’s lucky she’ll meet a Korean, and she’ll befriend her so that she’ll have a native teacher!!!

In the back of her mind, she wants to watch dramas and movies without subtitles, someday.

She will also drop by into a Korean grocery story, if it’s available in their community, to buy Korean products. Never mind the price.

She will try to know the Korean words/phrases related to love like ‘I love you’, ‘boyfriend’, ‘girlfriend’, and ‘I like you’. Even the simple ‘Thank you’ and ‘Stupid’.

The least thing a K-addict can do, is to get excited on saying Annyonghaseyo, once a Korean is on her way.

Hey!! What about marrying a Korean guy? and imitating Korean fashion?

Sharing her Passion

Once a K-addict has learned something new, she can’t wait to share it to her fellow addicts. But… but… but… she can even tell these to those who are not interested. Poor girl… she’s really excited to reveal what she just knew.

A K-addict has a big heart to:

• create a music video of her favorite scenes, and use her favorite soundtrack… upload it in youtube, and tries to get reaction from fellow addicts… whew!!

• visits blogs to check the latest, and comment… comment… and comment…

• write a review, or just randomly share any of her thoughts and post it on her blog or in a forum

• be updated on Korean entertainment news and tries to be the first to spread it to other fellow addicts

• search the hangul lyrics of soundtracks, then she’ll Romanize and translate it herself

• be a moderator in a forum

• design wallpapers of her favorite Korean stars, if she knows of course..

• if she can understand Korean, she subbed it and upload it in youtube

• upload audio and video files so that others can have it, too…

If you have want and done most of the things listed, you are indeed obsessed in anything about Korean. To all fellow K-addicts hard work to you guys!!! If I missed something…just post it, and I’ll edit this later. ^_^

6 Reasons Why I Love Watching Korean Dramas/Series

I have been planning for a couple of months now, to write a post about the “Reasons why I love K-Dramas”. For some time, I thought no one has given enough focus on why it is addicting, or why korean entertainment attained a great success worldwide. To my surprise, however, there are already a lot of articles and posts. These were just published two or three years ago. And apparently, I haven’t check those articles and posts coz I have no interest during those years.

Anyway, I decided that I will make these as my sources. And in fact, I already listed my reasons before I have read their articles. It just happened that they thought first what I just thought. That’s the essence of research, isn’t it? (But as of now these links or quotes will not be available. This post will be updated gradually.)

And just like other fans, I will compare these Korean dramas to our local dramas.
__________________________________

1. Simple Plots and Few Characters

Most Korean Dramas have their stories and episodes well-planned before they start shooting. Too lengthen the episodes, I believe, rarely happens. Since there are also a few characters, viewers can easily go with the flow of the story.

Unlike our local shows, there are many subplots, and when it happens, a new character comes or a character dies/disappears. The story becomes complicated and sometimes too draggy, that most of the times it lasts for a year.

When Mexican soap operas were still popular in the Philippines, local drama shows lasts for more than two years. I can’t remember how long Mara Clara was, but it lasted I guess for more than five years. Whew!!! Also, local drama shows then involved a whole community of characters. LOL. A guessing game once you will missed a month of episodes.

So when Korean Dramas (we call it koreanovelas) are aired in the Philippines, and become a hit, local shows started shortening their air time.

Actually not all Korean Dramas have excellent stories, but it is still proper to say that most of these are well-written, and they have captured the interests of the young and the old audience.

2. Good Looking (and Fashionable) Korean Stars

Next to a good story is asking “Who are the stars of that show?” To see handsome and beautiful celebrities make me eager to watch the story more. I want to see them everyday (if I watched it on our local TV)

I remember when Full House was a big hit in the Philippines, I dreamt of wearing the skirts of Song Hye Kyo, and had my hair as hers. Oh, especially in Princess Hours… I wish I can wear Yoon Eun Hye’s clothes. LOL

I’m not really a fashionista, but at least I noticed that shops here are selling Korean Fashion Clothes, and I’ve seen some Filipinas wearing them.

3. Putting values on relationships, such as family relationship, friendship, and romantic relationships (to be updated still)

Korean Dramas don’t show so much intensified emotions or events like a character being raped, physically abused by relatives, went crazy because she got poor…Kidnapping, Setting a house on fire, or Blasting cars. Most of the stories are focused on human relationships, how to deal with other people well. Most of the viewers can easily relate once a conflict arises. Viewers empathize with the characters in Korean Dramas, however simple their lives are.

4. Better Production Values (to be updated still)

Great Shots (Sceneries / Camera Angles)

I really like how the angles are taken in most Korean series I already watched like in Princess Hours and Winter Sonata—really great cinematography. Most of the time, natural frames were used in the scenes in Goong….making the scene more artistic. I also like the cinematography of Temptation of Wolves, The Classic, Sad Movie, and Lover’s Concerto. Oh, how I love the opening credits of Temptation of Wolves.

South Korean cinema has remained a “full service cinema”.

Hmmm… I can’t explain this but I just agree to the article I have read about it. I believe, that is what lacking in our local cinema. Filipino entertainment, however, is trying to catch up little by little. I hope a film school will be put up in the Philippines, in the near future, like in South Korea. A school just focused on improving the value of entertainment industry in the Philippines. I just miss the times I hear from the news that Filipino movies and shows got International Awards.

5. Collectible Soundtracks

Really cool, enchanting, enjoyable to hear. One of the reasons I got hooked in watching Korean dramas / movies are the background music of the scenes. Although we can’t understand the lyrics, music has no language barrier… it touches our hearts. I like the soundtracks from Goong, IRRLY, WSAYF, The Classic, Sad Movie, Full House, Dalja’s Spring, among others.
6. Learning Korean Culture (to be updated still)

Bowing their heads when they greet someone, respecting the elders, eating kimchi, the piggy back carry, singing in Noraebang or the Karaoke house, drinking Maekju when got problems, having their weddings in Modern and traditional way…

These are the most obvious things you’ll observe once you watch Korean dramas, and learning a different culture from yours is very interesting indeed.
________________________________________

Disclaimer: I don’t hate all our local drama series. In fact, I salute most of our Filipino Stars because they really can act well especially the antagonists of the shows. But it is just boring to watch shows with same themes over and over again. Themes like corruption, vengeance, stories involving gunmen, and other acts of violence. Is that the typical life of an ordinary Filipino? Well…

I’m actually glad that most local shows now are adapting the stories in Komiks, though these are still complicated stories. At least, Filipino Entertainment is making a distinction among Asian Dramas. (Filipinos are really good in hard-hitting dramas.)

After watching Korea’s Sad Movie, however, I realized that there are simple experiences in our lives worthy to be seen in TV or in Movie screens. And Wonderful Life, though the story is about a child with a leukemia, the flow of the story was inspiring and light. It hits your heart slowly.

A Love to Kill
Wonderful Life (their daughter is suffering)
A Rosy Life

Stories with leading characters under a certain contract or under a mutual agreement

K-Drama
Full House
My Girl

K-Movie
100 days with Mr. Arrogant
My Little Bride

Stories with leading characters that meet and live together and fall in love eventually

Princess Hours (forced marriage)
My Girl
Sweet 18 (forced marriage)
Attic Cat
Wonderful Life (have to marry because of the baby)
The Man in the Vineyard

List of K-dramas and movies where the leading characters are reminiscing the past, especially if they are lonely or crying.

Well, I think I don’t have to write them all. Hmmmm…
